Open Day on 4th September 2010

The fish changed

Before the children took their nap; this aquarium was filled with fish. However, when they woke up; I've replace the fish with shrimps.

Some of their funny comments when they saw the shrimps:
- What happen to the fish? (the innocent one ask)
- Teacher, the fish changed become lobsters (the clever one make conclusion)
- No, not lobsters; they are crabs (the cleverer one correct the clever one)

Teachers have hard time tahan ketawa....wak hahaha wak hahahaha... Of course; we have to control ourselves not to humiliate them.

We took that opportunity to talk about crabs, lobsters, prawns and shrimps. Their differences and similarity.

Fishing

Recently, I let the children play fishing. Yes...with real fish. Unfortunately we do not have a camera (hand phone also forgot to bring). How much fun they have..I can't describe. They were thrilled to have the opportunity to catch real fish in our school's small little pond.

They came out with many ways to catch the fish. First with bare hands, then with containers, with ladles, etc. Until finally, Teacher Celine took out the net for them.

You think we are mean. No la. We've to let them have the net last because we would like to observe their ideas of catching fish.

We will definitely do this activity again.

Making cookies 2

This is how you make cookies:

1. Measure the correct amount of flour and sugar.

2. Beat the eggs.

3. Mix everything together.

4. Crush the cornflakes.

5. Roll the dough into small balls.

6. Roll the little dough-balls in the crushed cornflakes (almost ready for the oven).

7. Put the tray into the oven. Ting! it's ready.

8. That's how our cookies look like.

9. Mission accomplished!

10. Yummy! Yummy! Yum! Yum! Time to enjoy our cookies.

Building a house

Positioning the box to build a house.

Should we lay it flat? We can only sit.
Let the box be upright; too few people can go in.
But it will be the right height for all.

Features of a house

Let's make a door.
We need windows too.
The roof must be like that /\ (hand signed by a child)
Why? Because the rain. Let the rain falls (good idea...in another words so that we don't trap rain water in the roof)
How about doorbell?

These are the questions, answers and statements made when we were busy working on the house. Everyone has their share of thoughts and ideas. It was noisy at times when everyone are eager to contribute their ideas and also talk about their own house (in comparison to the house we made).

Finally, we decided that the box is too small to make a house. We decided to call it a stall. With the stall, we can play sell burgers.

Froggy Froggy

During one of the animal theme lesson; I was lucky to have caught a frog for the children study the frog up-close. It was only two days ago; I read a book about FROG... features of frog ... big goggling eyes, webbed feet, slimy skin, wide mouth, etc, etc...how frog moves, etc

Now, the children can look at the frog in front of them and don't have to imagine what is webbed feet, what is big goggling eyes, wide mouth, slimy skin and those things that we learnt from the book. And the frog was resting and also look back at the children :)

"Let's see what will happen; if I add in some water"; I said. Jolin reminded me "Not too much water" (I think she's worry that I may drown the frog).

So I poured in some water into the container. The frog began to swim. Now, the children can see the webbed feet clearly.

Another child requested for me to add in more water to see what will happen. So...in went the water. Nothing happen. The frog just continued to swim; but at times the frog will rest with two hind legs stretching out. The children could see the difference that the frog resting in dry environment (refer the first picture) and in water (the picture below).

So much to learn from this simple observation. Interesting isn't it?

How to keep your room neat & tidy?

One of our moral lessons is on keeping our room neat & tidy.

We acted to mess up the room after playing with toys and leave the blanket as it is. Then I asked the children; "Do you like your room to look this messy?" All of them firmly and loudly said "No."

Then I asked "When you wake up, do u fold your blanket?" One by one started to tell story that my kakak will do it; my mummy will do it, I don't need blanket when I sleep, etc. etc. All kinds of stories except of saying "I never fold my blanket."

Come to the interesting part; "Who wants to learn to fold blanket?" You will be surprise that all of them love to do it. They took turn to fold the blanket again and again and again.

They also pretended to play toys and mess up the room then rearrange everything back in order again.

I asked the children whether will they keep their own room neat and tidy like what they were doing? They said they will. I only hope that they get the chance to practise what they want to do.
